Automatic discounts

A discount with no code, that applies itself when it is the better deal.

User guide
These guides describe implemented workflows. You still need an account and access to the product; individual features can have separate requirements.

Where: Dashboard, Discounts

Leave the code field blank when you create a discount and it becomes automatic instead of typed. Nobody has to know it exists or ask for it — it is checked against every basket that qualifies, and a shopper sees the saving appear in their bag and again above "Place order", with no code to type.

  • An automatic discount is named, not coded, and that name is what a customer sees on their bag and their order — give it a name you would show a buyer, not an internal label.
  • Running more than one automatic discount at a time, you decide which is tried first. Reorder the list, and the first one that actually applies to a shopper's basket is the one that pays — not the biggest saving, and not the newest.
  • Every condition an ordinary code can carry — a minimum, a scope to some products, a first-order or win-back window, cash-on-delivery or prepaid only, an end date, a usage cap — works the same way on an automatic discount, with one exception: a limit on how many times one customer can redeem it is only offered on a discount with a code, because that limit is counted against a customer nobody has identified until an automatic discount has already applied.
  • A redemption counts the same whether or not a shopper typed anything. A cap of 500 means 500 either way.
Before you continue
Only one discount ever pays on an order — an automatic discount and a shopper's typed code are never combined. When both would apply, whichever is worth more to the shopper is the one that pays, and the other does nothing at all. Run an automatic promotion worth more than your coupon codes and every one of those codes stops paying out for as long as it is worth more — the shopper still gets the better price, but it is not their code that gave it to them, and their code's own usage count and limits are untouched. Expect this to reach you as "a customer says my code didn't work" rather than as a report about the automatic discount: the code was never charged, so it was never used up, and nothing was wrong with it.

A tie goes to the typed code, and so does any case involving free shipping on either side — what a free-shipping discount is worth depends on the delivery address, and the bag does not have one yet. A shopper who typed a code always keeps it in both of those situations, because they acted and an automatic discount asked nothing of them.

A first-order or win-back condition on an automatic discount is not shown or asked about anywhere before the order is placed — not in the bag, and not on the checkout page either, unlike a coded first-order discount. It is decided once, silently, the moment the shopper presses Place order, and the saving is not previewed beforehand: a qualifying shopper simply pays the discounted total, with nothing on screen to say so in advance. The bag may still hint that a saving is close ("Spend ₹200 more for 10% off"), because that gives away nothing about who is asking.
